Lusushwane Bulk Water Supply
Lushushwane Bulk Water Supply Scheme, constructed over 3 Phases, with an overall project cost of R 135million. The scheme was officially opened by the Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Ms Pamela Tshwete in April 2019.
The scheme provides safe potable water to 4335 households, reaching 17348 persons, who had limited or no piped water. The scheme extended from Robinsdale to Ouboom, servicing 10 areas within the Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality. The project is funded by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) with Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) as the Implementing Agent (IA) and the Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality (CALLM) as the Water Service Authority (WSA) and beneficiary.
The scheme included the upgrading and refurbishment of all Bulk Water Infrastructure on the existing water scheme including:
· Raw And Clear Water Pump Stations
· Rising Mains And Gravity Mains
· Storage Reservoirs And High Level Steel Tanks
· 4Mℓ/day Water Treatment Works
· 30km’s Of Pipelines Of Various Sizes, Ranging From 110Ømm uPVC to 250Ømm (Steel/uPVC)
The multiyear funded project, uplifted the community providing 12 575 person day work opportunities and directly opportunities to 11 local suppliers.
The design allowed for the phased implementation, and the scheme was brought together on the successful completion of Phase 3 and the official opening in April 2019. The primary objective of providing safe potable water to communities within the Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality, the water services authority was achieved.
